Take a walk!

Winter days dont have to be gloomy…..πŸ’™

The bonfires are mountains of steaming ash, fireworks have gone pop, sparklers have fizzled out…..but it doesn’t mean we have to pack up the wellies and coats and go into hibernation ✨

Instead, grab the hats, scarves and gloves (and maybe a flask of tea) and go for a wander along the coast, across the countryside or at your local park 🌍

Fresh air and a bit of light exercise works wonders for the mind as well as the body and with days being grey, wet and windy it can make all the difference to your energy and good mood levels πŸ’›

You dont have to walk far…its just important to take time out of your hectic lives once in a while to enjoy the world we live in, spend time with our friends and family and fill our lungs with air and BREATH 🌬

My 5 tips for getting a good night’s sleep!

Sleep is so important to a person’s overall health and wellbeing, whether you are a parent or not, however when you do have children (especially young ones), a good night’s sleep can seem the most important thing in the world.

From helping us function more effectively during the day, to being able to cope better with endless night feeds for babies, toddler tantrums and busy school runs, the benefits of a good night’s sleep are endless.

As much as I would like to wave a magic wand and promise you an undisturbed, deep sleep every night, sadly I cannot as when you have children each night is like a game of sleep roulette. However, I can share with you some of the actions I take to help get a better night’s sleep when the gods are in my favour:

  1. Get some fresh air everyday – Even if you just spend some time in the garden or walk for the school run instead of drive…. being outside in the fresh air is a great way of tuning your bodyclock to understand daytime and night time. If you do you this daily, your body will naturally wake up more during the day and slow down towards night time ready for the bedtime hours.
  2. Get in to a routine – And stick to it!! For our body clocks to find a day and night rhythm, we need to ensure we are following a routine. This way our bodies know what is expected of it. So, if you choose 10pm to be your bedtime and follow this daily, you are helping your body know when to unwind and slow down to sleep.
  3. Move your clock – Laying in bed watching each hour tick by just adds to the mental pressure of falling asleep and in turn will mean you are likely to delay visiting the land of nod.
  4. Turn off your phone – If you have your phone on next to you in bed, there will always be one more news story to read, one more email to reply to, one more reason to scroll through social media. Take away the distraction by finishing everything you need to do on your phone, downstairs, before you go to bed and then forget about it until you wake up. Less screen time, more sleep time.
  5. Don’t stress – Putting pressure on yourself to get a full 8 hours sleep or not waking up before the alarm goes off, will only increase the likeliness that it will happen. Having children, inevitably means we are likely to be disturbed at some point of the night, so make going to bed enjoyable and a pleasure and hopefully you will get at least a few restful hours when you can.

It is a special, sweet, lovely and precious thing….being a Mum, but also lonely. There, I’ve said it πŸ‘„πŸ’¬

So many mum’s find it hard to say to their loved ones and friend’s that they find being a parent lonely or tough at times. Surely these wonderful, precious human beings that we created can’t bring such negative feelings? 😫

We feel if we say it out loud that our children will suddenly feel less loved, that loved ones will think “she cant cope”, that friends will think your an awful mother, that your world will implode 🌍πŸ’₯

But guess what….it doesnt! And you will feel so much better for it 😚

I do find being a Mum lonely at times and other mum’s will do as well, so why would we hide that feeling from the one group of people who would understand and relate to that feeling the most πŸ™„ The one group of people who you can offer advice to, share ideas and coping tips with, have a cuppa and laugh or cry with and who can say to you honestly “i know how you feel” πŸ€—

Mental Health is so important in every aspect of our lives….we wouldnt ignore a broken ankle, so why ignore a hurting mind/heart πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

Think….what would you tell your child if they came up to you and said “Mummy, i feel lonely sometimes” πŸ˜ͺ I bet you would give them a hug and tell them that you will help them sort the problem out, find them a group of friends to look out for them and check in to make sure its going ok πŸ‘€

So do that for yourself….tell someone your feelings, welcome a hug and find a solution together…and they will be the ones checking in on you or visa versa if that friend needs you too πŸ‘­

So come on #letstalklonely πŸ‘„πŸ’¬

You need a reason!

img_20190127_113656_2124384893135003621077.jpgThis right here is the biggest influence and reason why I decided 10 months ago to kick start my life again and become a healthier, fitter and stronger (mentally and physically) version of myself πŸ‘©πŸ’ͺ

My family needs me to love, care and support them….but I also need to love, care and support myself πŸ€—

Something that never comes easy to a Mum as our whole world resolves around what our children need.

I wanted to be able to cope with the disturbed nights and not be an ogre in the morning πŸ•˜πŸŒ

Keep up with the demands of school runs, swimming lessons and play dates without flaking at the end of the day and having nothing left for my husband πŸŠβ€β™€οΈ

Feel energised to run around the park on a Sunday afternoon instead of just staying in as “it had been a long week” πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ

Have something to do for JUST ME that made a difference πŸ’ͺ

I could go on but I think you get my drift…..

Take a moment to reflect on what it is that makes YOU want to be the best you can be and really think about why and how you can implement some changes (even if only small to begin with) πŸ‘

Losing Weight vs Getting Healthy

So many ladies said to me last week “I am eating less and being active but I still haven’t lost any weight”….something I was guilty of myself not that long ago, so I totally understand where they are coming from and how they must feel.

Now, weighing ourselves on the scales does have a small roll to play in helping us to keep a rough guide of weight we have or haven’t lost, but it is literally only useful for that. We CANNOT judge our bodies by what the scales tell us alone.

We need to change our mindset on weight loss and getting fit and healthy. The two things are not the same and I will tell you why.

When you are focussing on purely losing weight using the scales as your only guide, you will constantly be on an emotional rollercoaster as the figures go down one day and up the next….or even hourly. This is not a healthy, sustainable way of living for anyone.

By trying to getting fit and healthy however, you are going to see far more benefits than just simply losing weight. You will feel more energised, sleep better, feel happier, feel more confident, lose centimetres…..the list is endless. But guess what…..your actual weight loss may be very slow and may be minimal.

Hence why last week, I told all of those ladies to buy a tape measure, take their measurements as well as photos and then do them again in 4 weeks…If they are then eating clean, healthy meals and being active, they should be feeling some if not all of the previously mentioned benefits……with weight loss being an added bonus. A much better way to do it I think.

Personally my weight loss (as per the scales) can fluctuate if I dont drink enough water, its time of the month or if I weigh on my scales upstairs or downstairs!! Yes, honestly!!! So I know I cannot rely solely on what they are telling me. I always take my measurements and to give you a good example how epic this can make you feel about yourself….I once lost 10 centimetres off my waist over 5 weeks (photo below) which was actually the most biggest and most visible result I have had to date….in those 5 weeks I lost 8lbs in case you were wondering, but lbs can come and go as I said before.

So rather than getting hooked on thinking “to look good, I need to lose weight” we need to be saying “I will focus on being healthy, not weighing less”.
